Common Dreams and Their Meaning in Islam
Dreams have always fascinated people, and in Islam they carry real meaning. The Prophet ﷺ said that a true good dream is one of the forty-six parts of prophethood. Understanding how Islam views dreams helps you respond to them wisely rather than with fear or superstition.
The Three Types of Dreams
The Prophet ﷺ explained that dreams are of three kinds: a good dream that is glad tidings from Allah, a frightening dream from Shaytan meant to sadden, and a dream that merely reflects a person daily thoughts and worries.
When You See a Good Dream
If you see something you love, know it is from Allah. Praise Him, feel hopeful, and share it only with those you love and trust. A good dream is a gift, but it should not make you arrogant or lazy in worship.
When You See a Bad Dream
For a distressing dream, the Prophet ﷺ taught us to seek refuge in Allah from its evil and from Shaytan, spit lightly to the left three times, change the side you were sleeping on, and not tell anyone about it. Then it will not harm you.
Interpreting with Caution
Not every dream needs interpretation, and only knowledgeable, sincere people should interpret. Never build major life decisions solely on a dream. Instead, rely on the Quran, sound guidance and istikhara, treating true dreams as gentle encouragement, not commands.
