How to Perform Wudu (Ablution) Step by Step
Wudu is the ritual purification a Muslim performs before prayer. Allah says that He loves those who purify themselves, and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that cleanliness is half of faith. Performing wudu correctly is the first key to a valid and peaceful prayer.
The Intention and Bismillah
Begin with a sincere intention in the heart to purify yourself for the sake of Allah. Then say Bismillah before you start. Intention is an act of the heart, so there is no need to say it aloud.
Washing the Hands, Mouth and Nose
Wash both hands up to the wrists three times, making sure the water reaches between the fingers. Rinse the mouth three times, then draw water into the nose and blow it out three times. This cleans the openings of the face before the face itself.
Washing the Face and Arms
Wash the entire face three times, from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear. Then wash the right arm up to and including the elbow three times, followed by the left arm the same way.
Wiping the Head and Washing the Feet
Wipe the head once with wet hands, from the front to the back and back again, then wipe the ears with the same moisture. Finally, wash both feet up to the ankles three times, cleaning between the toes. Complete your wudu with the well-known dua of shahada, and the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for you.
