Preparing for Ramadan: A Practical and Spiritual Checklist
The righteous predecessors used to prepare for Ramadan six months in advance. While the month itself is a gift, those who plan for it harvest far more of its blessings.
Spiritual Preparation
Begin fasting voluntarily in Shaban, as the Prophet ﷺ fasted most of this month. Increase Quran recitation now so your tongue is accustomed before Ramadan begins. Practice praying at night, even two rakahs, to ease into taraweeh and tahajjud.
Plan Your Quran Schedule
To complete the Quran once, read about 4 pages after each of the five prayers — roughly one juz per day. Set a realistic target: consistency beats intensity.
Practical Preparation
Prepare simple meal plans for suhoor and iftar to avoid wasting Ramadan evenings in the kitchen. Reduce commitments, screen time, and idle gatherings. Prepare your charity plan — automate daily sadaqah so no day of Ramadan passes without giving.
Guard the Gains
Set clear duas you will repeat throughout the month, especially for Laylatul Qadr: "Allahumma innaka afuwwun tuhibbul-afwa fafu anni." Enter the month with a written intention and leave it with habits that outlast it.
