When. As the hand reaches for the food, before the first mouthful — not a grace said over a covered dish while everyone waits, but words attached to the act of eating itself. If it is forgotten and remembered halfway through, the transmitted repair is bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu, "in the name of Allah at its beginning and its end," which folds the eaten half back under the same words.
The words. Three words in English, one in Arabic: bi-smi-llah. The prefix bi- means with, by means of, and in, all at once — accompaniment and instrument in a single letter. Ism is the name, and in this usage a name is not a label but a presence invoked. What the sentence conspicuously lacks is a verb. Arabic permits the verb to be supplied by the situation, so the phrase completes itself differently each time it is said: in the name of Allah I eat, I drink, I begin. That deliberate gap is why the same word serves at a meal, at the start of a journey, over a letter, and at the door.
Why so short. Most supplications ask for something. This one asks for nothing. It only relocates an ordinary act — the most ordinary, repeated three times a day — from the self to Allah. Its shortness is the point: it is brief enough that a child holds it and a distracted adult has no excuse.
The other end of the meal. It has a closing counterpart, al-hamdu lillahi alladhi at'amana wa saqana, praise to Allah who fed us and gave us drink. The two together bracket the meal rather than decorate it.
Common confusion. This is not the longer bismillahir-rahmanir-rahim that opens the suras. Both are good speech; what the reports carry for food is the short form.
Praise be to Allah Who has fed me this and provided it for me without any might or power on my part.
Praise be to Allah Who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection.
In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.
In the name of Allah we enter, in the name of Allah we leave, and upon our Lord we rely.
In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the male and female evil spirits.
