Surah Al-Aadiyaat

The name. Al-Adiyat means "The Chargers," or "The Racers," from its opening oath by the racing steeds, panting as they charge (100:1), the first in a run of oaths describing horses in a raid — striking sparks, charging at dawn, stirring up dust, arriving together in the center of the enemy. It is Meccan, and uses this single sustained image of a cavalry charge, unusual among the Quran's short surahs for staying with one scene across several verses, to open onto a statement about human character.

What it is known for. The surah is known for turning from that opening image directly to man's own ingratitude toward his Lord (100:6) and his intense love of wealth (100:8), a contrast between the discipline and courage shown toward a worldly raid and the carelessness shown toward one's own Creator. It closes by asking whether man does not know that when graves are overturned and what is within hearts is brought out, his Lord is fully aware of him that Day (100:9-11), a rebuke that lands harder for having been preceded by an image of a raider who is very much awake to danger everywhere except where it matters most.

Reading it. At 11 ayahs it is a short surah, read in a few minutes. Its opening five verses form one continuous, breathless scene rather than separate short clauses, unusual among the surahs around it, so a first-time reader should read them together as a single galloping image before the surah shifts, at its midpoint, into direct address and a much quieter, more accusatory tone.
