سُورَةُ العَصۡرِ

Surah Al-Asr

The Declining Day, Epoch · 3 verses · Meccan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

About this surah

The name. Al-Asr means "The Declining Day," or simply "Time," from its opening oath by time itself (103:1), one of the shortest oaths in the Quran opening one of its shortest surahs. It is Meccan, and unlike most short Meccan surahs, does not move through a sequence of images or a historical example — it states its entire argument in the two verses that follow the oath and stops.

What it is known for. The surah is known for compressing an entire view of human life into three lines: mankind is in loss, except for those who believe, do righteous deeds, and advise one another to truth and to patience (103:2-3). Its economy is exactly what it is known for — readers have long pointed to how a formula this short manages to name belief, action, and two distinct forms of mutual responsibility, truth and patience, without a wasted word, which is part of why it is so often the surah offered first to someone asking what the Quran actually teaches.

Reading it. At 3 ayahs it is the shortest surah after Al-Kawthar, read in a few seconds. Its brevity is not a simplification to work around — every clause carries weight, and a first-time reader should slow down rather than speed through it, since the surah's entire structure is that single short sentence: loss, except for four things, held together and none of them optional.
