سُورَةُ النَّاسِ

Surah An-Naas

Mankind · 6 verses · Meccan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

About this surah

The name. An-Nas means "Mankind," from its repeated address to the Lord, the Sovereign, and the God of mankind (114:1-3), naming the same audience three times with three different attributes of Allah before naming the harm sought refuge from. It is Meccan, and is the final surah of the Quran, closing the mushaf on a note of protection rather than of summary or conclusion.

What it is known for. The surah is known, together with Al-Falaq before it, as one of the mu'awwidhatan, recited daily in the morning and evening remembrances and before sleep, and it is known specifically for locating the harm it warns against inside a person rather than outside — the evil of the retreating whisperer, who whispers into the hearts of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind (114:4-6). Where Al-Falaq lists external threats, An-Nas closes the Quran by naming an internal one, whispering that can come from another person as easily as from an unseen source, which is part of why the two surahs are so consistently read together rather than apart.

Reading it. At 6 ayahs it is a short surah, read in under a minute, and its position as the Quran's final surah is worth knowing for a first-time reader working through the mushaf in order — after 114 surahs that range from the Quran's longest legal and narrative material to its shortest oaths and images, the book ends not with a summary but with a short, personal request for protection, addressed in the same voice a reader might use for themselves.
