سُورَةُ الرَّحۡمَٰن

Surah Ar-Rahmaan

The Beneficent · 78 verses · Medinan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

About this surah

The name. Ar-Rahmaan means "The Most Merciful," one of Allah's own names, and the surah opens by naming Him directly before anything else is said: the Most Merciful taught the Quran, created man, and taught him speech (55:1-4). Long-standing custom calls it "the bride of the Quran" for the ornamented, paired quality of its language. Site records list the surah as Medinan, though its style and address are close to the Meccan surahs around it in the mushaf, and its precise setting has been described differently by different scholars.

What it is known for. The surah is known above all for its refrain, "So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny?" — repeated 31 times across the surah, addressed each time to both jinn and mankind together, following verses describing one favor after another: the two seas that meet without mixing (55:19), the destruction awaiting everything on earth while the Face of your Lord remains (55:26-27), gardens and their fruits, and companions in paradise (55:72). Because the refrain runs through the whole surah rather than appearing once, it is often the first passage a new reader can follow along with by ear, even before being able to read the rest of the Arabic independently.

Reading it. At 78 ayahs it is a mid-length surah, read comfortably in one sitting, and its repeating structure — short bursts of description punctuated by the same line — makes it move quickly and read as more familiar than its length might suggest to someone hearing it recited. A first-time reader should notice how the address shifts partway through, from favors visible in creation to a direct description of the gardens promised to those who feared standing before their Lord, closing with the statement that blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor (55:78).
