Surah Al-Qiyaama

The Resurrection · 40 verses · Meccan

About this surah

The name. Al-Qiyaama means "The Resurrection," from its opening oath sworn by the Day of Resurrection and by the reproaching self that questions its own conduct (75:1-2) — an oath that pairs a public, cosmic event with the most private of judges, a person's own conscience. It is Meccan, addressing outright denial that scattered bones could ever be gathered again (75:3-4) with a direct argument from the same power that first formed a person from nothing.

What it is known for. The surah is known for instructing the Prophet not to move his tongue hastily to keep pace with the revelation as it came to him, with the assurance that its gathering and its recitation were Allah's responsibility, not his to rush (75:16-19) — a passage read as the origin of how revelation was received and later preserved. It also carries a widely quoted description of two kinds of faces on that Day: some radiant, looking toward their Lord, and others gloomy, certain that a back-breaking calamity is about to befall them (75:22-25).

Reading it. At 40 ayahs it is a mid-short surah, read comfortably in one sitting. It moves from its opening oath, through the case for resurrection, into the account of how revelation itself was received, and closes with a description of death's arrival and a rebuke of human carelessness, so a first-time reader should notice that the middle section, on the Prophet's own reception of the Quran, sits inside a surah otherwise devoted to the resurrection rather than continuing that theme directly.

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones?

  4. 4

Yes. [We are] Able [even] to proportion his fingertips.

But man desires to continue in sin.

He asks, "When is the Day of Resurrection?"

  14. 14

Even if he presents his excuses.

  16. 16

Indeed, upon Us is its collection [in your heart] and [to make possible] its recitation.

  18. 18

So when We have recited it [through Gabriel], then follow its recitation.

  19. 19

Then upon Us is its clarification [to you].

  20. 20

No! But you love the immediate

  21. 21

    And leave the Hereafter.

  22. 22

    Looking at their Lord.

  24. 24

Expecting that there will be done to them [something] backbreaking.

  26. 26

No! When the soul has reached the collar bones

And it is said, "Who will cure [him]?"

  28. 28

And the dying one is certain that it is the [time of] separation

  29. 29

And the leg is wound about the leg,

  30. 30

To your Lord, that Day, will be the procession.

  31. 31

And the disbeliever had not believed, nor had he prayed.

  32. 32

But [instead], he denied and turned away.

  33. 33

And then he went to his people, swaggering [in pride].

  34. 34

    Woe to you, and woe!

  35. 35

Then woe to you, and woe!

  36. 36

Does man think that he will be left neglected?

  37. 37

Had he not been a sperm from semen emitted?

  38. 38

Then he was a clinging clot, and [Allah] created [his form] and proportioned [him]

  39. 39

And made of him two mates, the male and the female.

  40. 40

Is not that [Creator] Able to give life to the dead?
