Al-'Afuww

The root. Al-'Afuww comes from ʿ-f-w, a root whose base sense is to erase or wipe away, and by extension to let something go entirely rather than merely overlook it. 'Afw in everyday Arabic is still the word for erasing a trace or a debt; a footprint that the wind has 'afā over is one left with no mark at all. The intensive pattern fa'ūl, seen in 'afuww, marks a quality shown repeatedly and thoroughly rather than as an occasional concession.

What it means here. Al-'Afuww is read as the one who does not merely forgive a wrong but erases it as though it had not happened, going further than Al-Ghafur, "the Forgiving," which is usually read as covering a fault rather than removing its trace entirely. The distinction is one classical scholars draw carefully: forgiveness can leave a record set aside, while what this name describes leaves no record at all — the difference between a debt marked paid and a debt struck from the ledger.

Where it is met. Al-'Afuww appears repeatedly in the Quran describing Allah, in the accusative form 'afuwwan, usually paired with another name in the same verse — "ever Pardoning and Forgiving" in Surah An-Nisa 4:43 and again at 4:99, "ever Pardoning and Competent" at 4:149, and "surely Pardoning and Forgiving" in Surah Al-Hajj 22:60 and Al-Mujadila 58:2. It is also the name the Prophet ﷺ taught his household to recite in the last nights of Ramadan, in the well-known supplication "O Allah, You are Pardoning, You love pardon, so pardon me."
