Al-Jami'
The Gatherer
The root. Al-Jami' comes from j-m-ʿ, a root meaning to bring separate things together into one — jamʿ is the act of gathering, jamāʿa is a gathered group, and the same root gives Friday its name, al-jumʿa, the day the community gathers for prayer. Jāmiʿ is the active participle, "the one who gathers," used in ordinary Arabic for anything that collects — a jāmiʿ mosque is one large enough to draw the whole community together for the main congregational prayer.
What it means here. Al-Jami' is read most centrally as the one who will gather every soul that has ever lived on a single day for reckoning, scattered bodies and scattered histories brought back into one place after having been dispersed across time and the earth. It is also read more broadly, as the one who brings together what seems unrelated — cause and effect, opposites, the scattered pieces of a life — a gathering read as active in the ordinary run of creation and not only reserved for the resurrection.
Where it is met. Al-Jami' appears in Surah Aal-E-Imran 3:9, in words the Quran gives believers to say in supplication: "Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt." The verb form of the same root recurs elsewhere describing the same event, including Surah At-Taghabun 64:9, "the Day He will assemble you for the Day of Assembly," naming the resurrection as the gathering the name itself is centered on.
