الْمُؤَخِّر

Al-Mu'akhkhir

The Delayer

Delays contain divine wisdom.

The root. Al-Mu'akhkhir comes from ʾ-kh-r, the same root behind ākhir (last) — a root spanning what comes behind, what is held back, and what is set aside for later. The causative form the name is built on, like Al-Muqaddim's, names an agent actively holding something back rather than something that simply happens to lag.

What it means here. Al-Mu'akhkhir is read as the one who delays whom and what He wills — postponing a punishment, extending a life past when it might otherwise have ended, or setting a matter back from where it would naturally have fallen. Paired always with Al-Muqaddim, the two together deny that timing is ever accidental: what looks like a delay is not an absence of decision but a decision made in the other direction.

Where it is met. The noun Al-Mu'akhkhir is not spoken as a name in the Quran's own wording, but the verb yu'akhkhir is repeated across several verses describing exactly this kind of delay: Surah Ibrahim says Allah "delays" wrongdoers to a day their eyes will stare in horror rather than punishing them at once, and adds elsewhere that He invites people to repentance and "delays your death for a specified term." Surah An-Nahl and Surah Fatir both state that when that term arrives it will not be delayed a single hour, closing the same door from the other side.
