الْمُقَدِّم

Al-Muqaddim

The Expediter

What Allah brings forward none can delay.

The root. Al-Muqaddim comes from q-d-m, a root spanning what is old, what stands first, and what is moved to the front — taqdīm is the act of bringing something forward, ahead of where it would otherwise fall. The causative form the name is built on names an agent actively advancing something, not something that merely happens to arrive early.

What it means here. Al-Muqaddim is read as the one who brings forward whom and what He wills — advancing a person's rank, a nation's turn, or an appointed time ahead of where it might otherwise have fallen, by a decision that answers to nothing above it. The name is always spoken with its counterpart, Al-Mu'akhkhir, "the Delayer," met next — together the two state that both directions of timing, earlier and later, are equally His to set, so that nothing is either rushed or held back except by design.

Where it is met. Neither Al-Muqaddim nor Al-Mu'akhkhir is spoken as a name in the Quran's own wording; the pairing comes from the wider tradition around the ninety-nine names rather than from a verse using either noun. The nearest the Quran comes is Surah An-Nahl's statement that when a people's appointed term arrives, "they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede it" — a claim about both directions of timing being fixed, without naming the one who fixes them Al-Muqaddim in as many words.
