الْقَيُّوم

Al-Qayyoom

The Sustainer of All

Paired with Al-Hayy in the greatest supplications.

The root. Al-Qayyoom comes from q-w-m, a root spanning standing, rising, and maintaining something upright — qāma is to stand, qawwama is to set right and keep standing. Al-Qayyoom is shaped on an intensive pattern rarely used elsewhere, naming not a momentary standing but a permanent, unbroken act of sustaining, the way a pillar keeps a roof from falling rather than simply happening to stand beneath it.

What it means here. Al-Qayyoom is read as the one who sustains all existence by Himself, needing nothing to hold Him up while everything else depends entirely on Him to keep standing — every creature, every law of nature, every instant of continued existence. It is fused to Al-Hayy for a reason: a life with no beginning or end would mean little if that life also tired or slept, so the Quran states outright, in the same verse, that neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him.

Where it is met. Al-Qayyoom never appears without Al-Hayy beside it in the Quran's own wording. Ayat al-Kursi in Surah Al-Baqara is the fullest statement: "the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence, neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep... their preservation tires Him not." Surah Aal-E-Imran opens with the same pairing, and Surah Taha uses it to describe the scene of every face humbled before Him on the Last Day — the sustaining that holds up creation now is the same authority creation answers to then.
