أحمد
Most praiseworthy; one of the names of the Prophet ﷺ
الأكثر حمداً؛ من أسماء النبي ﷺ
Root: ح-م-د (ḥ-m-d), "to praise" — the same root as Muhammad. Aḥmad is the elative form (af'al), which in Arabic carries both "most" and "more": the most praiseworthy, and also the one who praises Allah most.
From the same root: ḥamd, Muḥammad, Maḥmūd, Ḥamīd, Maḥmūda.
Who carried it: it is one of the names of the Prophet ﷺ himself. The Qur'an records Isa (Jesus) foretelling a messenger to come "whose name is Ahmad" (as-Saff 61:6), which is why the two names are treated as one in meaning and are often given together as Muhammad Ahmad.
Spellings: Ahmad, Ahmed, Ahmet (Turkish), Achmad/Ahmad (Indonesian), أحمد.
Pronunciation: AḤ-mad — the ḥ is the deep Arabic ḥāʾ, made in the throat, not the light English h.
Feminine counterpart: Ḥamīda, Maḥmūda.
