Meaning
Blessed, righteous
المبارك الميمون
أيمن
Blessed, righteous
المبارك الميمون
Root: ي-م-ن (y-m-n), the right hand and the right side, and from that blessing and good fortune — in Arabic usage the right is the side of good, and the vocabulary follows. Ayman is the elative (afʿal): the more blessed, the most fortunate, and also plainly "the one on the right".
From the same root: yamīn (right hand, and also an oath, since the right hand was given on swearing), yumn (blessedness), maymūn (blessed, auspicious), aṣḥāb al-yamīn (the companions of the right hand), and al-Yaman, the country, named as the land on the right of one facing the sunrise.
In the Qur'an: Musa is called from al-wādi al-ayman — the right side of the valley, in the blessed spot (al-Qasas 28:30).
Who carried it: Ayman, the son of Umm Ayman, the freedwoman who cared for the Prophet ﷺ in his childhood and whom he kept close for the rest of his life. She is known to history by her son's name, following the Arab habit of calling a woman Umm — mother of — her eldest son.
Spellings: Ayman, Aiman, Eymen (Turkish), Aiman (Indonesian), Aiman (Urdu), Aymane (French/Maghrebi), أيمن.
Pronunciation: AY-man, stress on the first syllable, ay as in English "eye".
Feminine counterpart: Yumna (يمنى), Maymuna (ميمونة).
