آمنة
Trustworthy, safe; mother of the Prophet ﷺ
الآمنة المطمئنة؛ أم النبي ﷺ
Root: أ-م-ن (ʾ-m-n), "to be safe, to be trusted". Āmina is the active participle in the feminine: she who is secure, who is at peace, trustworthy.
From the same root: amān (safety), amāna (a trust held for another), īmān (faith), muʾmin (believer), amīn (trustworthy — the title Makkah gave the Prophet ﷺ before the revelation), and al-Muʾmin, one of the ninety-nine names of Allah.
Who carried it: Amina bint Wahb, the Prophet's ﷺ mother. She was widowed before he was born and died when he was six, at Abwa on the road back from Madina, after which he was raised first by his grandfather Abd al-Muttalib and then by his uncle Abu Talib.
Spellings: Amina, Aminah, Emine (Turkish), Aminah (Indonesian), Amina (Urdu), Aminata (West African), آمنة.
Pronunciation: AA-mi-na, with a long opening ā. Note that Amīna (أمينة, "trustworthy") is a closely related but distinct name with the stress on the second syllable.
Masculine counterpart: Amin, Ma'mun.
