About this name

Root: ب-س-م (b-s-m), "to smile". Basma is the ism al-marra, the noun of a single instance: not smiling in general but one smile, the particular one that appears on a face. Arabic distinguishes it carefully from laughter — ḍiḥk is audible, basm is not.

From the same root: ibtisāma (a smile, the everyday word), tabassum (the act of smiling), bassām and basmāʾ (one who smiles much), mubtasim. The Qur'an uses the verb of Sulayman, who smiled, laughing at the speech of the ant (an-Naml 27:19) — the two words placed together precisely because they are not the same thing.

Spellings: Basma, Basmah, Basme (Turkish), Basmah (Indonesian), Basma (Urdu), Basma/Besma (Maghrebi), بسمة.

Pronunciation: BAS-ma, stress on the first syllable, the s plain and unemphatic.

Note: basma (a smile) and basmala (the saying of bismillāh) are unrelated. The second is built from the phrase itself, not from this root — a common confusion because the letters overlap.

Masculine counterpart: Bassam (بسّام), the intensive form: one who smiles constantly.
