حسن
Handsome, good; grandson of the Prophet ﷺ
الجميل الطيب؛ سبط النبي ﷺ
Root: ح-س-ن (ḥ-s-n), beauty and goodness together — Arabic does not split them as English does. Ḥasan is the adjective: good, fine, handsome, said of a face and of a deed with the same word.
From the same root: ḥusn (beauty), iḥsān (doing a thing beautifully, excellence in conduct), muḥsin (one who does good), aḥsan (best — as in aḥsan taqwīm, the finest of forms, at-Tin 95:4), ḥasanāt (good deeds), Ḥusnā (as in al-asmāʾ al-ḥusnā, the most beautiful names), and Ḥusayn, which is the diminutive of Ḥasan.
Who carried it: al-Hasan ibn Ali, grandson of the Prophet ﷺ, son of Ali and Fatima. The sources report the Prophet ﷺ saying that Allah would reconcile two great parties of Muslims through him — and he did give up his claim to the caliphate to end fighting between them.
Spellings: Hasan, Hassan, Hasan (Turkish), Hasan (Indonesian, Urdu), Hassane (Maghrebi), حسن.
Pronunciation: ḤA-san, stress on the first syllable, opening with the deep throat ḥ.
Note: Ḥassān (حسّان), with a doubled s and stress on the second syllable, is a different name — the intensive faʿʿāl form — borne by Hassan ibn Thabit, the poet who answered the attacks on the Prophet ﷺ in verse. English spells both "Hassan".
Feminine counterpart: Hasna (حسناء), Husna (حسنى).
