إبراهيم
Father of nations; name of the beloved Prophet
أبو الأنبياء خليل الرحمن
Origin: Hebrew Avraham, understood as "father of many / father of nations", carried into Arabic as Ibrāhīm. Like Yusuf, the Qur'an keeps the name in its original shape.
Who carried it: the Prophet Ibrahim, called Khalīl Allāh, the intimate friend of Allah (an-Nisa 4:125) — a title given to no other Prophet in the Qur'an. He built the Kaaba with his son Ismail (al-Baqara 2:127), and it is his and his family's actions that the Hajj retraces: the running between Safa and Marwa is Hajar's search for water, and the sacrifice at Mina is his.
In the daily prayer: every Muslim says his name in every prayer, in the second half of the tashahhud — "as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim".
Spellings: Ibrahim, Ibraheem, İbrahim (Turkish), Ibrahim (Indonesian), Ibraheem (Urdu), إبراهيم.
Pronunciation: ib-raa-HEEM.
Also given as: Ibrahim Khalil, pairing the name with the title.
