Meaning

Name of the archangel Gabriel

اسم الملَك جبريل عليه السلام

About this name

Origin: from Hebrew and Aramaic Gabriʾel, understood as "man of God" or "strength of God" — the element ʾēl, God, is the second half, as in Ismail and Mikail. Arabic received it early and the readers of the Qur'an differ over how to voice it: Jibrīl, Jibraʾīl, Jabraʾīl and Jibrail are all recorded readings, which is unusual and shows the name entered as a foreign word before it settled.

Named in the Qur'an: the angel Jibril is named directly — in al-Baqara 2:97–98, where enmity to him is answered by naming Allah, His angels and His messengers together, and in at-Tahrim 66:4. He is also described rather than named: the Trustworthy Spirit who brought the revelation down upon the Prophet's heart (ash-Shu'ara 26:193–194), and Rūḥ al-Qudus.

Spellings: Jibril, Jibreel, Jibraeel, Cebrail (Turkish), Jibril (Indonesian), Jibraeel (Urdu), Djibril (West African and French), Gabriel (through Greek and Latin — the same name), جبريل.

Pronunciation: jib-REEL, stress on the long second syllable; the j is the Arabic jīm, closer to English j than to French j in most recitation.

Note: because the name belongs to an angel rather than to a Prophet or a Companion, its use as a given name varies widely by region — common in some Muslim societies, rare in others.
