Noble, honorable
النبيل الشريف
نبيل
Noble, honorable
النبيل الشريف
Root: ن-ب-ل (n-b-l). Nabīl is an adjective on the faʿīl pattern, from nubl: noble, high-minded, possessed of excellence of character. The lexicographers record a second, older layer of the same root — nabl means arrows, and nābil is the archer — and they connect the two: nabāla first meant skill and precision, the mark of a good bowman, and rose from there to mean distinction of soul. Whether the moral sense grew out of the archer's or stood beside it from the start is not agreed.
From the same root: nubl and nabāla (nobility, excellence), nabl (arrows, a collective noun), nābil (archer), anbal (nobler, the elative), nubalāʾ (the noble ones, a plural used as a book title in the classical biographical tradition).
Spellings: Nabil, Nabeel, Nabîl (Turkish, uncommon), Nabil (Indonesian), Nabeel (Urdu), Nabil (French/Maghrebi, widespread in Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia), نبيل.
Pronunciation: na-BEEL — stress on the second syllable, which carries a long ī. All three consonants have straightforward English equivalents, which makes this one of the easier Arabic names to say correctly.
Feminine counterpart: Nabila, in common use across the Arab world.
