Helper, one who grants victory
الناصر المعين
ناصر
Helper, one who grants victory
الناصر المعين
Root: ن-ص-ر (n-ṣ-r), "to help, to give aid that brings victory". Nāṣir is the active participle: the one who helps, who comes to another's support. The root does not mean help of any kind — it is aid given to someone against an opponent, so victory is folded into the word rather than added to it.
From the same root: naṣr (victory — the name of the 110th chapter of the Qur'an), nuṣra (support), anṣār (helpers; the people of Madinah who received the emigrants are called the Ansar for exactly this reason), manṣūr (one granted victory), istinṣār (to seek help), intiṣār (triumph), nāṣir and naṣīr (an-Naṣīr is among the names of God), and the names Nasr, Nusrat, Mansur and Nasira.
Spellings: Nasser, Nasir, Naser, Nassir, Nasır or Nasır/Nâsır (Turkish; Nasrettin as a compound), Nasir (Indonesian), Nasir or Naseer (Urdu), Nasser or Nacer (French/Maghrebi), ناصر.
Pronunciation: NAA-sir — stress on the first syllable, which is long. The middle consonant is ṣād, an emphatic s pronounced with the tongue flattened and the back of the mouth opened; it darkens the vowels around it. An ordinary English s gives a different word.
Feminine counterpart: Nasira, and Nusrat is used for both in South Asia.
