Nuh — Name Meaning in Islam

Root: the classical lexicographers connect Nūḥ to ن-و-ح, whose sense in Arabic is lamentation and wailing, and some report that he was so named for the length of his weeping. Others treat the name as foreign, from the Hebrew Noaḥ, "rest" or "comfort" — and note the two senses sit oddly together. Both readings are given; the honest position is that the derivation is disputed.

From the Arabic root: nawḥ (lamentation), nāʾiḥa (a wailing woman), and by a separate but related image, the cooing of a dove.

Who carried it: the Prophet Nuh, the first of the messengers sent to a people who rejected him, and the one the Qur'an gives the longest span: it names the figure of nine hundred and fifty years among his people (al-Ankabut 29:14). The seventy-first sūra carries his name, and it records his complaint that he called them by night and by day and it only drove them further away — a passage read as much about the endurance of calling as about the flood that ended it.
