Safe, sound; the noble companion
السالم المعافى؛ الصحابي الجليل
Root: س-ل-م (s-l-m), "to be whole, sound, free of defect". Salmān is on the faʿlān pattern, describing a state that fills the one it belongs to: wholly safe, sound, intact. The root's core idea is not merely absence of danger but the completeness that comes when nothing is broken or missing.
From the same root: salām (peace, and the greeting), islām (submission that brings wholeness), muslim, sālim (safe), salīm — the Qur'an's qalb salīm, a sound heart, the one thing said to be of use on the Day (ash-Shu'ara 26:89) — Sulaymān, Salīm, Salmā, and as-Salām, one of the names of Allah.
Who carried it: Salman al-Farisi, the Persian Companion. He left his home in Persia searching for the religion he had been told was coming, passed through the hands of several teachers and was sold into slavery on the way, and reached Madina to find the Prophet ﷺ there. At the siege of the trench it was he who proposed digging a ditch around the city, a Persian tactic the Arabs had not used; the Prophet ﷺ said of him that he was of the household.
Spellings: Salman, Selman (Turkish), Salman (Indonesian), Salman (Urdu), Salmane (Maghrebi), سلمان.
Pronunciation: sal-MAAN, stress on the long second syllable.
Feminine counterpart: Salma, Salima, Salwa is a different root.
