Beauty, grace
الزينة والجمال
Root: ز-ي-ن (z-y-n), "to adorn, to beautify". Zayn is the verbal noun used as a name: beauty, adornment, that which makes a thing lovely. In classical usage zayn is the exact opposite of shayn, blemish or disgrace, and the two are often paired in a single phrase — a person is spoken of as an adornment to his people rather than a blot on them.
From the same root: zīna (adornment — al-Aʿraf 7:31 tells people to take their adornment at every place of prostration, and al-Kahf 18:46 calls wealth and children the adornment of worldly life), muzayyan (adorned), tazyīn (decoration), izdāna (to be adorned), zayyana (to make something appear attractive). The name Zaynab is often placed here too, though the lexicographers differ: some read it as containing zayn, others as an old fixed name, and some identify it with a fragrant plant.
Note: Zayn also appears widely as the first half of compound names, where it means "adornment of" whatever follows.
Spellings: Zayn, Zain, Zein, Zeyn or Zeynel in Turkish compounds, Zaini (Indonesian), Zain (Urdu), Zine or Zin (French/Maghrebi, as in the Tunisian usage), زين.
Pronunciation: ZAYN — one syllable, a single clean diphthong, rhyming with English "line" only in shape, not in vowel.
Feminine counterpart: Zayna, and Zaynab is close by.
