Dreaming of Hospital in Islam

A hospital is read by why the dreamer is in it and whether he leaves. Entering it for treatment is read as a period of repair — something in the dreamer's life being attended to rather than something newly wrong. Leaving it well is the completion of that reading, and it is the better dream by far. Being kept there, or unable to leave, points to a condition the dreamer feels held by: a dependence, a debt, an arrangement he did not choose. Visiting someone else shifts the dream onto that relationship and onto the dreamer's concern for the person, which is very often exactly where it came from. Working in one, or treating others, is read as being the one others lean on, and the older readings attached both honour and burden to that. A hospital that is empty or abandoned is read as help that exists in name but is not there when reached for. Seeing it from outside without entering is read as a matter recognised and not yet dealt with.

No classical dream manual describes a hospital in the modern sense, and it would be dishonest to pretend one did. What the tradition knew was the bīmāristān, the endowed hospital found in Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo, and the reading attached to it is the plain one: it is the place a person is handed over to be looked after, where he is not in charge of his own affairs for a while. Every variation above follows from that single fact rather than from any older symbolism.

This dream reaches people who are ill or afraid for someone ill, so it needs saying without hedging: it is not a diagnosis, not a warning of sickness, and not news about anyone's recovery. Illness is a matter for treatment and for doctors. Worry about a hospital produces dreams of hospitals, and that is the ordinary explanation. If it frightened you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it to anyone.
