Dreaming of Name in Islam

A name in a dream is read by whose it is and how it is used. Being called by a good name, or by one's own name spoken well, is the settled reading: honour among people, and in the older interpretations a task the dreamer is being fitted for. Being called by a name that is not one's own is read by the meaning of that name, not by the person who bears it — this is the point the interpreters were most consistent about. Being given a new name is read as a change of state or of role. Hearing one's name called from a distance, without seeing who calls was treated carefully: read as a matter that will require the dreamer, and the careful interpreters refused to read it as anything about death. Being called by an ugly or mocking name is read as something the dreamer fears being known for rather than as what people actually say. Writing a name, or seeing it written, is read as a matter being fixed rather than merely spoken. Forgetting one's own name has been read as a loss of place — not knowing where one stands rather than who one is.

Names carry weight in the sources themselves, which is why the interpretations lean on meaning rather than on the sound. The Qur'an makes the teaching of the names to Adam the first thing said about human knowledge (al-Baqara 2:31), and it records a name given from above with the note that no one had been given it before (Maryam 19:7). In Arabic usage a person's name is treated as a description, not a label, and interpreting a dream-name by its meaning follows directly from that.

A name heard in sleep is not a summons, not an instruction, and not a message addressed to you. It settles no question and carries no ruling — least of all about whom to marry or what to call a child. If the dream disturbed you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not tell it to anyone.
