About this dream

Ramadan in a dream — what does it mean in Islam?

The month is read by what the dreamer is doing in it and by how it arrives. Seeing Ramadan begin, or the crescent sighted is the settled favourable form: a season of relief opening, and a matter that had been heavy becoming lighter. Fasting in the dream and finding it easy is read as a burden the dreamer is carrying well; fasting and being unable to complete it points to an intention stronger than the dreamer's present strength, not to a failing in religion. Breaking the fast deliberately was read gravely by the older interpreters, but as a sign of neglect in the dreamer's affairs generally rather than as a ruling on his worship. Ramadan arriving out of season, in the wrong month is read as good coming at an unexpected time. Praying at night or reciting during it turns the reading toward guidance and settled peace of mind. The month ending, or Eid arriving is read as a task completed and its weight set down.

Ramadan: where does this meaning come from?

No association needs constructing here: al-Baqara 2:185 names Ramadan as the month in which the Qur'an was sent down as guidance, and the same passage is the one that speaks of ease being intended for you and not hardship. Forgiveness, guidance and relief are what the month itself is, so the interpreters read the dream as those meanings arriving rather than as a calendar event.

Ramadan in a dream — is it a bad sign?

This is not a ruling on your worship and not a verdict on your fasting, past or coming. It does not tell you a hardship is ending, and it does not oblige you to anything. Anyone approaching Ramadan, remembering one, or carrying guilt about a missed fast will see it in sleep for that reason alone. If the dream troubled you — and dreams of failing at worship trouble people badly — the guidance is to seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and not to relate it to anyone.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
