Dreaming of Road in Islam

The road is read by its shape rather than by where it goes. A straight, wide road is the plain favourable form, read as a course that needs no cleverness to follow. A fork, or several roads meeting is what most dreamers actually see, and the older interpreters read it as a decision already present in the dreamer's waking life rather than as one being announced. A road that narrows is read as a course that remains open but costs more the further it is taken. A road blocked or ending at a wall turns the reading toward a plan that needs rethinking, and it was not treated as a closing of all options. A familiar road that suddenly looks unfamiliar is read as a settled matter seen freshly. Walking a road at night, or without knowing the destination, is read as continuing on trust. A road others are walking and the dreamer is standing beside is read as hesitation rather than as exclusion.

The image is built into the language of religion itself. The straight path is asked for in al-Fatiha 1:6, in the prayer every Muslim repeats daily, and the Qur'an uses road and way throughout for conduct rather than for ground. So when a road appears in a dream, Arabic and the dream tradition both read it as a manner of proceeding. Nothing has to be invented here; the metaphor is older than the interpretation.

This dream does not tell you which choice to make, does not endorse the option you are already leaning toward, and is not a ruling. It does not foretell a journey. Anyone weighing a job, a marriage, or a move dreams of roads and junctions constantly, and the tradition holds that most of what is seen in sleep is the sleeper's own day coming back to him. If the dream left you anxious, ask Allah for refuge from its harm, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.
