Dreaming of Umbrella in Islam

The reading depends on who holds it and whether it covers. Holding an umbrella in rain is the plain favourable form, read as a difficulty passing over the dreamer without soaking him. Someone else holding it over you is the richer form, and the older interpreters read it as protection arranged by another: a patron, a parent, or an authority acting on the dreamer's behalf. Holding one over somebody else reverses that and is read as responsibility taken up. An umbrella that turns inside out or breaks in wind is read as a protection that was thinner than assumed, and the interpreters attached this to arrangements rather than to people. Carrying an umbrella in clear weather is read as caution, and it was not treated as foolish. Losing an umbrella, or leaving it behind is read as neglecting a means of safety already given. An umbrella against sun rather than rain shifts the reading toward relief from exposure, closer to shade than to shelter.

The Arabic word is built from the word for shade, and shade in the Qur'an is a settled image of relief given rather than earned: the clouds sent to shade the Children of Israel in al-Baqara 2:57, and the extended shade named among the rewards described in al-Waqi'a 56:30. In a hot country shade is not comfort, it is survival, and it is always something interposed by someone or something else. That is precisely how the dream is read, which is why the hand holding the umbrella carries more of the meaning than the umbrella does.

This dream guarantees nothing. It is not a promise that you are protected, not a warning that trouble is coming, and not a ruling. Rain on the window, a hard week, or worry about someone you are responsible for will produce it. If it left you uneasy, ask Allah to protect you from its harm, turn onto your other side, and do not repeat it to others.
