Transliteration

Ash-hadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh

Translation

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger.

About this dua

When. In the moment the wudu ends — water still on the arms, before drying, before moving on to whatever the wudu was for. It belongs to the finish, not to the washing.

The words. Ash-hadu is not "I believe." The root sh-h-d is the root of the witness in a court and of the eyewitness to an event: testimony about something seen, given aloud, and binding on the one who gives it. That is a stronger and more public act than assent. Wahdahu la sharika lah then does the same work twice from opposite sides — wahdahu, alone, states the oneness positively; la sharika lah, no partner to Him, denies its opposite. Arabic often pairs an affirmation with the negation of its contrary, because a claim is only sealed when the alternative is shut.

Servant before Messenger. 'Abduhu wa rasuluh puts servanthood first and message second, and the order holds a correction: the man through whom revelation came is named a slave of Allah before he is named a carrier of Allah's word. It is the phrase that keeps honour from becoming something else.

Why a creed after washing. The limbs have just been washed, in a fixed order, with water. Then the tongue says what no water reaches. The sequence moves outward to inward, and it is the reason this is not simply a nice thing to add — the act was incomplete as a bodily routine.

A common addition. Many follow it with Allahummaj'alni minat-tawwabin waj'alni minal-mutatahhirin — make me among those who turn back to You and among those who keep themselves pure — which reads the washing back as repentance.
