About this dua

When. Over income — on payday, at the end of a working week, when a contract is renewed or a price is agreed. It also fits the opposite moment, when the figure is lower than hoped, because the second half of it is aimed exactly there.

The words. Two requests, and they run in opposite directions. The first, barik li fi rizqi, is about the provision: that what comes should hold, cover what it must cover, and not leak away in repairs, illness and waste. The second, qanni'ni bima razaqtani, is about the person. Qana'ah is contentment, and the verb here is causative — 'make me content'. That form matters. Contentment is asked for as something given, not as a discipline the speaker promises to practise. Anyone who has tried to argue himself into being satisfied with a sum knows why it is phrased that way.

Why both halves are needed. Blessing without contentment is quietly wasted: the provision suffices and the person still feels short. Contentment without provision is endurance, not ease. The supplication asks for the outside and the inside in one sentence and does not treat either as sufficient alone.

Bima razaqtani. 'With what You have provided me' — past tense, the amount already fixed. The request is not for the figure to change. It is placed on the money that is actually in hand.

A related one. There is a wider supplication asking blessing in what has been provided to us, ending with refuge from the Fire. This one is narrower and personal, and the two are not substitutes for one another.
