Surah Al-Kawthar

The name. Al-Kawthar means "Abundance," from its opening declaration that Allah has granted the Prophet al-Kawthar (108:1), a word the surah does not itself define further; readers have long understood it as an abundance of good granted to him, including a river or fountain of Paradise named by that word. It is Meccan, and at three ayahs is the shortest surah in the entire Quran.

What it is known for. The surah is known for being addressed to the Prophet at a moment of being mocked by an opponent who taunted him as cut off, without descendants to carry his name forward. Its two remaining verses answer that directly: pray to your Lord and sacrifice to Him alone, and it is your enemy, not you, who is truly cut off (108:2-3) — a reversal delivered in the fewest possible words, so that the taunt is answered rather than argued with at length.

Reading it. At 3 ayahs it is the shortest surah in the Quran, read in seconds, and along with Al-Ikhlas one of the first surahs many new readers memorize simply because there is so little to hold. A first-time reader should notice how much the surah accomplishes in so few words — a gift named, an instruction given, and an insult turned back on the one who made it — without a single verse spent explaining any of the three.
