سُورَةُ الكَافِرُونَ

Surah Al-Kaafiroon

The Disbelievers · 6 verses · Meccan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

About this surah

The name. Al-Kafirun means "The Disbelievers," from its opening address, say: O disbelievers (109:1), a direct address rather than a description offered about a group from a distance. It is Meccan, and consists entirely of the Prophet being told what to say to those who had asked him to compromise on worship — a surah made almost entirely of a single spoken statement.

What it is known for. The surah is known for its structure of paired declarations — I do not worship what you worship, nor are you worshippers of what I worship — repeated with variation before closing with for you is your religion, and for me is my religion (109:2-6). It is customarily recited together with Al-Ikhlas in the two rak'ahs before the dawn prayer and in other voluntary prayers, and is widely understood as the Quran's clearest statement that Islam's core distinction from other worship is not negotiable, stated without hostility but without concession either.

Reading it. At 6 ayahs it is a short surah, read in under a minute. Its repetition can look at first like the surah simply restating one line, so a first-time reader should notice the shift in each pair — present tense, then future, moving from what is currently the case to a settled refusal that anything will change — before the final verse states the conclusion those two rounds were building toward.
