سُورَةُ النَّصۡرِ

Surah An-Nasr

Divine Support · 3 verses · Medinan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

About this surah

The name. An-Nasr means "The Help," or "Divine Support," from its opening reference to the help of Allah and the conquest arriving (110:1), understood to mean the conquest of Mecca. It is Medinan, and is counted among the last surahs, or among the last complete passages, revealed to the Prophet, addressed to a moment of victory rather than struggle.

What it is known for. The surah is known for the scene it describes — people entering the religion of Allah in multitudes, a striking image after years in which the Muslim community had been small and often embattled (110:2) — followed immediately by an instruction that has struck many readers as unexpected at the height of success: glorify your Lord with praise and ask His forgiveness (110:3). Read at the moment of the Prophet's greatest worldly achievement, the surah's command to seek forgiveness rather than to celebrate has long been understood as a sign of his approaching death, a reading many trace to how closely the surah pairs triumph with humility rather than leaving triumph to stand alone.

Reading it. At 3 ayahs it is one of the shortest surahs, read in seconds. Its brevity carries real weight given what it is commonly understood to mark — the end of an era of struggle and, not long after, the end of a life — so a first-time reader should notice that the surah spends none of its three verses describing the victory itself in detail, moving straight from success to the instruction that follows it.
