سُورَةُ التِّينِ

Surah At-Tin

The Fig · 8 verses · Meccan

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ

About this surah

The name. At-Tin means "The Fig," from its opening oath by the fig and the olive, then by Mount Sinai and by this secure city (95:1-3) — four things named without the surah stating outright what links them, though readers have long connected them to places associated with earlier prophets and with Mecca. It is Meccan.

What it is known for. The surah is known for its statement that man was created in the best of stature, then returned to the lowest of the low, except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, who have a reward without interruption (95:4-6) — a compact statement on human potential paired directly with moral responsibility, often quoted for both halves. It closes by asking what then causes you to deny the Recompense, and affirming that Allah is the most just of judges (95:7-8); on reciting this closing verse in prayer, it is customary to answer it, silently or aloud, with words affirming one's own witness to that.

Reading it. At 8 ayahs it is one of the shortest surahs, read in under a minute. Its four-part opening oath is unusually compressed even by the standard of short Meccan surahs, so a first-time reader should not expect the surah to explain what ties the fig, the olive, Sinai, and Mecca together — the connection is left for the reader to carry, while the surah itself moves quickly to its real subject, which is what a human being does with the standing he or she was created with.

Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted.
