الْحَقّ

Al-Haqq

The Absolute Truth

Anchors the soul in truth and certainty.

The root. Al-Haqq comes from ḥ-q-q, a root that names something as established, owed, and unable to be denied — ḥaqq is what is due, what is real, and what is right, all at once, because Arabic does not separate them the way English separates "true" from "owed" from "just." A debt is ḥaqq, a fact is ḥaqq, and a rightful claim is ḥaqq — the root names reality with the weight of an obligation behind it, not a fact that could just as easily be otherwise.

What it means here. Al-Haqq is read as the one whose existence and whose every attribute are fixed and necessary, in contrast to everything else, which exists only because He willed it and could as easily not have. Where a created thing's truth is borrowed and can lapse, His is the ground every other truth stands on — a promise is true because He is Al-Haqq, a revelation is true because it comes from Him, and worship is only rightly owed to Him because He alone is truly, necessarily real.

Where it is met. Al-Haqq is named directly and repeatedly: Surah Al-Hajj and Surah Luqman both state plainly "that is because Allah is Al-Haqq, and what they call upon besides Him is falsehood." Surah Ta-Ha calls Him "the Sovereign, the Truth," and Surah An-Nur closes with "they will know that Allah is Al-Haqq, the Manifest." The same root also names the Quran itself as ḥaqq "from your Lord" in Surah As-Sajdah, and names the Day of Judgment al-ḥāqqah, the event no one can deny.
