الشَّهِيد

Ash-Shaheed

The All-Witnessing

Truthfulness, for Allah witnesses all.

The root. Ash-Shaheed comes from sh-h-d, the root behind shahāda (testimony, witness) and shuhūd (presence — being there to see for oneself). What ties the senses together is presence that produces certain knowledge: a witness testifies because they were there, not because they were told. Ash-Shaheed is shaped on the faʿīl pattern, naming a witnessing that is constant and complete, present to everything rather than to one event alone.

What it means here. Ash-Shaheed is read as the one who is present to every matter as it happens, so that His knowledge of it is not report or inference but direct, first-hand witness — the strongest form of knowing the root can name. It sits close to As-Samee' and Al-Baseer, which name hearing and sight specifically, while Ash-Shaheed names the wider fact of being present as witness to everything at once, including the intentions and disputes no eye or ear alone could settle.

Where it is met. The phrase "Allah is sufficient as a witness" appears repeatedly, closing verses in Surah Yunus, Surah Ar-Ra'd, Surah Al-Isra, and Surah Al-Fath, always where a person's sincerity or a prophet's message is in question. Surah Al-Hajj states plainly that Allah is a witness over all things. Surah Al-Baqara commands believers to be witnesses for Allah among people, holding up the human duty of testimony as a reflection, at human scale, of the name itself.
