الْحَكِيم

Al-Hakeem

The All-Wise

Trust in the wisdom behind every decree.

The root. Al-Hakeem shares its root with Al-Hakam, ḥ-k-m, but takes the faʿīl pattern instead of the plain participle, the shape Arabic uses for a quality held completely rather than an act performed. Where Al-Hakam names the authority to judge and settle, Al-Hakeem names the wisdom that makes every one of those judgments exactly right — nothing in it wasted, nothing missing, nothing that could have been arranged better.

What it means here. Al-Hakeem is read as wisdom that places everything precisely where it belongs — in creation, in law, in the working out of every event — so that nothing happens without a reason fitted to it, even when that reason is not visible to the one living through it. It is paired constantly with Al-Alim and Al-Khabeer, and the pairing is not accidental: wisdom of this kind depends on a knowledge and awareness broad and deep enough to place every single thing correctly, which is why the Quran rarely names Allah wise without also naming Him knowing or aware in the same breath.

Where it is met. Al-Hakeem is paired with Al-Alim repeatedly in Surah Yusuf, following Yaqub's trust that his Lord's arrangement of events is sound, and with Al-Khabeer across Surah Al-An'am and the opening of Surah Saba. The same root also describes the Quran itself as ḥakīm, wise or firmly established, at the opening of Surah Yunus — the Book's soundness read as an extension of the wisdom behind the One who sent it.
