Al-Mudhill

The Dishonourer

Protection from humiliation lies with Allah alone.

The root. Al-Mudhill comes from dh-l-l, the root behind dhull, lowliness or humiliation, and dhalāla, being brought low or made submissive. It is the direct opposite of ʿ-z-z, the root behind Al-Mu'izz, and the two roots are treated in Arabic almost as a matched pair — one naming an unassailable standing, the other naming its loss. Al-Mudhill is built on the same causative verb-form pattern as Al-Mu'izz, describing the act of bringing about this state in another rather than experiencing it.

What it means here. Al-Mudhill is understood as the one who brings low whomever He wills, stripping away a standing, power, or protection that person may have believed was secure. It is never treated as a name on its own; it is read strictly together with Al-Mu'izz, its opposite, because the tradition presents them as one sovereignty over rank and honor working in two directions rather than two separate powers.

Where it is met. The exact title Al-Mudhill does not appear as a name in the Quran. Its verb form does, in the same verse of Surah Al Imran that carries the verb behind Al-Mu'izz, stating that Allah brings low whom He wills just as He honors whom He wills — the withholding half of a single verse that names both together.
