الْعَلِيم

Al-Aleem

The All-Knowing

Increases knowledge and illuminates the heart.

The root. Al-Aleem comes from ʿ-l-m, the root behind ʿilm, knowledge — one of the most productive roots in Arabic, giving words for scholar, science, marker, and the act of coming to know. Al-Aleem is the intensive faʿīl pattern, the same shape as Ar-Raheem, marking knowledge as a quality held completely and permanently rather than acquired in stages the way human learning is.

What it means here. Al-Aleem names Allah's knowledge as total and essential to Him — encompassing what is seen and unseen, what has happened and what has not yet happened, without needing to be learned, taught, or reminded, and without any part of it fading. This is the point where the name differs sharply from the ordinary Arabic word for a human scholar, ʿālim, built on the same root: a scholar's knowledge is gained, can be forgotten, and is always partial, while what this name describes has none of those limits.

Where it is met. Al-Aleem is one of the most frequently repeated names in the Quran, appearing across more than twenty surahs, very often closing a verse in a fixed pairing with another name — with Al-Hakim, the Wise, or with Al-Qadir, the Capable — a pattern that repeatedly ties Allah's knowledge to His wisdom or power rather than naming it in isolation.
