Happiness, bliss
الهناء والسعادة
Root: ه-ن-أ (h-n-ʾ), "to be pleasant, wholesome, easy to enjoy". Hanāʾ is the verbal noun: ease and contentment, the state of a life or a meal that goes down well and leaves no ill effect. Classical usage attaches it first to food and drink and then, by extension, to a whole life.
From the same root: hanīʾ (wholesome, agreeable — the Qur'an uses hanīʾan marīʾan in an-Nisa 4:4 of wealth taken with a clear conscience, and hanīʾan again of the food of Paradise), tahniʾa (congratulation, the word for wishing someone joy), muhannaʾ (one who is congratulated), hanā as a verb. The everyday Arabic congratulation mabrūk has hanīʾan as its more literary cousin.
Note: this is not the Hebrew Hannah ("grace") nor the Japanese Hana ("flower"), though all three are written the same way in English. The Arabic name has its own root and its own meaning.
Spellings: Hana, Hanaa, Hanae, Hanâ (Turkish, rare; Hande is unrelated), Hana (Indonesian), Hana (Urdu), Hanaa or Hanae (French/Maghrebi), هناء.
Pronunciation: ha-NAA — stress on the second syllable, which is long and closed by a hamza, giving the final vowel a clipped ending rather than a fading one.
Masculine counterpart: Hani, from the same root, meaning one who enjoys ease.
