River in Paradise, abundance
نهر في الجنة؛ الخير الكثير
كوثر
River in Paradise, abundance
نهر في الجنة؛ الخير الكثير
Root: ك-ث-ر (k-th-r), "to be many, to be abundant". Kawthar is an intensive form on the pattern fawʿal: not merely much, but abundance beyond counting — the form itself is what carries the excess.
From the same root: kathīr (many), kathra (abundance), akthar (more, most), takāthur (competing in amassing — the title of the hundred-and-second sūra), Kathīr.
In the Qur'an: the hundred-and-eighth sūra, the shortest in the Qur'an, opens "Indeed We have given you al-Kawthar" (al-Kawthar 108:1). The commentators record two readings held side by side: the abundance given to the Prophet ﷺ in every sense, and a river in Paradise that he was shown. Both are old and neither cancels the other.
Why the sūra matters to the name. It was revealed in answer to a taunt that the Prophet ﷺ was cut off, without lasting issue. The reply does not argue; it grants abundance and turns the charge back on the one who made it. The name carries that context, which is why it is given as a name of consolation.
Spellings: Kawthar, Kausar, Kevser (Turkish), Kautsar (Indonesian), Kausar (Urdu), كوثر.
Pronunciation: KAW-thar — the th is the soft English th of "thin", not t.
Masculine counterpart: none in common use; Kathir is a separate name from the same root.
