Mother of Prophet Isa; the purest woman
أم النبي عيسى؛ سيدة نساء العالمين
مريم
Mother of Prophet Isa; the purest woman
أم النبي عيسى؛ سيدة نساء العالمين
Origin: of Hebrew/Aramaic origin, Miryam, carried into Arabic as Maryam. The classical lexicographers gloss it in Arabic usage as "the devoted worshipper".
Who carried it: Maryam bint Imran, mother of the Prophet Isa. She is the only woman named in the Qur'an — every other woman in it is identified by relation — and she is named some thirty times. The nineteenth chapter carries her name, and a further passage in Al Imran (3:42) records the angels saying that Allah chose her and purified her above the women of the worlds.
In the sources: the Prophet ﷺ named her among the women who reached completeness.
Spellings: Maryam, Mariam, Meryem (Turkish), Maryam (Indonesian, Urdu), Mariama, مريم.
Pronunciation: MAR-yam.
Note: Maryam and the European Mary/Marie are the same name arriving through different languages, which is why it crosses between Muslim and Christian families more than almost any other.
