About this name

Root: س-ج-د (s-j-d), "to prostrate, to place the forehead on the ground". Sājida is the feminine active participle: she who prostrates — and the participle in Arabic describes an ongoing state, so the name says not that she prostrated once but that this is what she does.

From the same root: sujūd (the act of prostration), sajda (a single prostration, and the name of Surah 32), masjid (literally the place of prostration, and so the word for mosque), sujjad and sājidīn (those prostrating, plural), and the masculine name Sājid. The Qur'an uses these forms often: al-Fath 48:29 describes the believers as bowing and prostrating, seeking bounty from God; ar-Ra'd 13:15 says that whoever is in the heavens and the earth prostrates to God, willingly or otherwise; and al-Baqara 2:58 tells a people to enter the gate in prostration.

Spellings: Sajida, Sajidah, Sacide (Turkish), Sajidah (Indonesian), Sajida (Urdu), Sadjida or Sajida (French and Maghrebi), ساجدة.

Pronunciation: SĀ-ji-da, three syllables, stress on the first, which holds a long ā. The j is the soft English j of "jam" in most Arab pronunciation, though Egyptian speech gives it a hard g.

Masculine counterpart: Sājid, in common use.
