Small butterfly; beloved
الفراشة الصغيرة؛ المحبوبة
Origin: Yara has no Arabic triliteral root behind it, and it is worth being plain about that: the sequence does not belong to the classical lexicon, and no early Arabic dictionary lists it. It spread widely in the Arab world only in recent decades, and its derivation is genuinely disputed. The most commonly given explanation is Persian yār, meaning friend, companion, beloved — the word familiar from Persian and Urdu poetry, and from the Turkish yâr. A second, independent explanation is that the name entered international usage from Brazilian Portuguese Iara, a figure of Tupi origin, which would make the resemblance a coincidence rather than a common source. Both may be true at once for different families.
Words it is often connected to: Persian yār (companion) and yārī (help, friendship); Turkish yâr (beloved), which is the same Persian word. Attempts to attach it to Arabic roots such as ي-ر-ع or to read it as a form of warda are not supported by the classical dictionaries.
Spellings: Yara, Yarah, Iara, Yara or Yâren as a distinct Turkish name, Yara (Indonesian), Yara (Urdu), Yara (French/Maghrebi), يارا.
Pronunciation: YAA-ra — two syllables, stress on the first, which is long; the second is short and open.
Masculine counterpart: none; Yar is used as a word but not as a given name in Arabic.
