About this dream

Prayer (Salah) in a dream — what does it mean in Islam?

Prayer in a dream is read by whether it was complete and in what direction it faced. Praying calmly, facing the qibla, with the prayer finished is the plainest good reading: a matter carried through, a promise kept, an intention that reaches its end. Praying and being unable to finish — interrupted, losing count, unable to stand — is read as an obstruction in something the dreamer has begun, and the older readings treated it as a call to look at the obstacle rather than as blame. Praying in the wrong direction is read as effort spent sincerely on the wrong object. Leading others in prayer points to responsibility for people, and the interpreters read it seriously: what happens to the imam in the dream is read onto the trust he carries. Praying behind someone known shifts the dream onto your following of that person. Praying without wudu, or in unclean clothes, was read as something incomplete in the foundation of an affair rather than as sin recorded. Praying in a mosque strengthens the reading; praying in an unlikely place was read as good in an unexpected quarter.

Prayer (Salah): where does this meaning come from?

Nothing here is analogy. Salah in the dream is salah, and it carries in sleep what it carries awake: direction, order, a beginning and an end, and something owed and rendered on time. The Qur'an describes prayer as what restrains from indecency and wrong (al-Ankabut 29:45) and as an appointment fixed at set times (an-Nisa 4:103), and both senses run under the readings — uprightness, and things done in their proper hour.

Prayer (Salah) in a dream — is it a bad sign?

A dream of praying is not evidence that a person's prayers are accepted, and a dream of a broken prayer is not evidence they are not; the interpreters refused to judge anyone's standing before Allah from a dream. It is not a ruling and no missed prayer is made up by a dream. If one distressed you, seek refuge in Allah, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.

Dream interpretations are drawn from classical Islamic sources where one exists, and otherwise from general symbolism. They are guidance, never a ruling. Allah knows best.
