Dreaming of Prophet in Islam

This is the one symbol where the tradition is more careful, not less. Seeing the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, in his known description is held in the reports to be a true seeing, because Satan cannot take his form. The condition is the description: the scholars insisted that a figure who announces himself but does not match the transmitted description is not established as him. Seeing him at a distance, in a crowd is read as nearness to guidance in a general way rather than as something particular to the dreamer. Being addressed or instructed by him is where the greatest caution applies, and the settled position is below in Limits. Seeing another Prophet, named or understood is read according to what is known of that Prophet from the Qur'an: patience with Ayyub, exile and return with Yusuf, water and rescue with Nuh. Seeing a place associated with prophethood rather than a person is read as longing and as an inclination toward the practice rather than as a message.

Prophethood is described in the Qur'an as sealed, in al-Ahzab 33:40. That single fact shapes the whole reading: the dream cannot be an opening of anything new, so the tradition treats it as glad tidings and as a mercy to the dreamer, never as a channel. The good dream is described in the reports as one part of prophethood remaining after prophethood, and the emphasis is on the word remaining.

This must be said plainly. A dream never establishes a ruling, never abrogates anything, and never obliges anyone, even when the figure seen is a Prophet. Anything instructed in a dream is weighed against the Qur'an and the established Sunnah and is set aside if it disagrees. Nor does the dream make the dreamer superior to anyone, and speaking of it in order to be thought well of empties it. If any dream frightens you, seek refuge in Allah from its harm, turn onto your other side, and do not relate it.
