Dreaming of Yellow (color) in Islam

Yellow is read by its shade and by where it appears. A deep, bright yellow that pleases the eye is the favourable form and was read as honour, or wealth that is visible without being flaunted. A pale, sickly yellow on a face carries the opposite sense entirely and was read as weakness, worry or strain — the older interpreters distinguished the two shades sharply and warned against treating them as one colour. Yellow clothing is read by cut and cleanliness like any garment: sound and well-made, it is standing; faded or stained, it is a reputation losing its colour. Yellow leaves or crops turning yellow is read as something reaching the end of its season, which may be harvest or may be decline depending on what follows. Gold as yellow is read as wealth proper, and separately from the colour. Yellow appearing suddenly across a whole scene was read as a change of state coming over a matter rather than as anything about the objects in it.

The Qur'an holds both senses and that is precisely why the interpreters split them. In al-Baqara 2:69 the cow is a bright yellow whose colour delights those who look at it — yellow at its best, pleasing and rich. But in az-Zumar 39:21 crops are seen turning yellow before they become broken debris, an image of what has passed its life. So the same colour names both the height of something and its going, and the shade in the dream is what decides which.

This is not a health sign, not a diagnosis, and not a warning that anyone will fall ill. It is not a ruling and predicts nothing. Lighting in the room, autumn, jaundice worried about, a wall painted that week, or simply a yellow thing seen the day before will all put the colour into sleep. If the dream unsettled you, seek refuge in Allah from what troubled you, turn onto your other side, and keep it to yourself.
